Houghton Road Improvements
Hunter Contracting Co. (Hunter) widened five miles of Houghton Road, located in the City of Tucson, to a six-lane divided desert parkway with landscaping, public art, bike lanes, sidewalks, and bus pullouts. There are 40 acres of landscaped area that utilizes water harvesting and incorporates native plants and wildlife sensitive design features. The project scope also included three multi-barrel Con-ArchTM drainage structures, five signalized intersections, drainage upgrades, all-weather crossings, and rubberized asphalt for noise mitigation. Due to the efficient use of traffic control devices, Hunter saved the City of Tucson $1.2 million. Not only does Houghton provide vital access to Interstate 10, but it is also of tremendous value as a scenic corridor with treasured environmental resources. The project provided significant accomplishments in providing increased capacity, mobility, safety, and environmentally sustainable six-lane arterial roadway.
