Houghton Road Improvements

The Houghton Road widening project, undertaken by Hunter Contracting Co. (Hunter), has garnered multiple prestigious awards for its exceptional achievements. Spanning five miles within the City of Tucson, the project involved transforming Houghton Road into a six-lane divided desert parkway, complete with landscaping, public art installations, bike lanes, sidewalks, and bus pullouts. A notable highlight of the project is the incorporation of 40 acres of meticulously landscaped areas that employ water harvesting techniques and showcase native plants, while also being designed to protect wildlife habitats. Additionally, the project encompassed the construction of three multi-barrel Con-Arch™ drainage structures, five signalized intersections, drainage upgrades, all-weather crossings, and the implementation of rubberized asphalt for noise mitigation. Through the efficient deployment of traffic control devices, Hunter successfully saved the City of Tucson an impressive $1.2 million. The significance of the Houghton Road project extends beyond its role in facilitating crucial access to Interstate 10; it serves as a cherished scenic corridor, preserving invaluable environmental resources. Notably, the project has achieved substantial milestones by enhancing capacity, mobility, safety, and sustainability, thereby establishing a six-lane arterial roadway of immense value to the community.
