24th Street and Grand Canal Bridge

The 24th Street and Grand Canal Bridge project replaced an existing structurally deficient bridge. The project consisted of removing the existing failing and deficient two-span bridge and replacing it with a new single span voided slab bridge. Hunter Contracting Co. built new drilled shafts, cast in place abutments, precast voided slab girders, cast in place bridge deck including sidewalk and parapet walls, concrete approach slabs, roadway concrete flatwork, underground utilities, and asphalt paving. The new bridge superstructure was built during a two-week full road closure of 24th street, which was coordinated with SRP’s annual dry-up of the Grand Canal. There was an existing 30” irrigation line crossing over the SRP Grand Canal supported by the existing bridge center pier. This line was replaced as part of the project with a 30” stainless steel pipe that crossed over the Grand Canal with no intermediate support.
